Brief description of site and current use

A locality was a former factory of company Pottier in Oloron-Saint-Marie – approximately 12,000 people. The city is close to bigger city Pau (90,000 inh.) – 30km. The factory was abandoned in 1980. The area embodies a familiar urban narrative of buoyancy and later decline, as once thriving factories decayed into a grungy, post-industrial wasteland sundered from the rest of the town. The monobloc building (where Médiatheque is now) was built in early 20th century and was made to harvest energy by watermills. Also, the part of the factory was a small hydroelectric powerplant which was perserved and serves as a visual part of the Centre nowadays. The main target was to redevelop the whole site and neglected area. The owner of the whole area 5055 sq. m. is the municipality, thus the cost was lower. Since there was no decontamination needed, they started by building footbridges (company RTS) to connect the site from both banks of the rivers. The company Corajoud managed landscape and environment. One of the most important advantages lies in the quality of landscape of the area. Pyrenean mountain rivers and their wild banks in contrast with historic city. The main object was to preserve an outstanding view. The site won praise and the architect of the building, Pascale Guedot, was awarded the highest price in 2006 for designing this successful redevelopment project.
