Brief description of site and current use
In 1997, the freight traffic was closed down. Since that time the area was an inner-city brownfield. Occasionally, some buildings and the railway hub are still used for club activities or shunting works.
Since the development of the "Environment Station Sonneberg" in the years 1997 to 2000 a built-up pedestrian bridge over this site serves as conjunction of downtown and the housing area ‚Wolkenrasen’.
In the frame of the research project ‘optirisk’ many site development concepts were drawn for the site and finally, one concept was converted. The city administration of Sonneberg plans a timely implementation of the optimisation concept ‚Festival ground with a temporary exhibition site’. The concept can be realized in various construction stages. All buildings are supposed to be demolished, with the exemption of the physical structures in the area of ‘Tradition Steam Engine Plants’ and the older part of the freight shed.
A noise control report has been created already. The reusable building rubble materials remain in the form of a noise protection wall on the southern edge of the site. The clean-up of soil contaminations and the reuse of the site as ‚Festival ground with a temporary exhibition site’ should be implemented until 2012.
