Brief description of site and current use

History of the former Brewery in Jilemnice is very long. The first mention of Jilemnice’s brewery is from 1584. However first plan of brewery comes from 1716. In 1788 the brewery had been burnt down with other 114 buildings during big fire. In 1838 there was another big fire in Jilemnice and the brewery was burnt down again, but in the same year it was rebuilt. From this year came the mention of malting floor which lies on ten stone columns (so – called columnar hall). The last beer was brewed there in 1950. The brewery was many times reconstructed, but during communistic period it became dilapidated.

The first part of building’s revitalization considered the southern wing. It was reconstructed from the Krkonoše Mountains National Park Administration. It was finished in 1998 and this wing is used as a library and Krkonoše Museum. The northern wing belongs to the municipality of Jilemnice. It was also slowly reconstructed with help of Recovery Programme for Urban Monument Reserves and Urban Monument Zones (till 2007). In 2005 there started the efforts of complex reconstruction of the brewery. The municipality of Jilemnice successfully applied for Norwegian financial support program and in 2009 and 2010 was the brewery under the reconstruction.

There was a celebratory opening in October 2010. The building is not brewery any more. It is used as library, museum, market hall of crafts, information centre for youth, and multifunctional hall. The official name of this building is still Brewery in Jilemnice.
