Brief description of site and current use

The expanse of the former „Kontex“-blouse manufactory was revitalized within the scope of the model project for valorization of brownfields in the administrative district Greiz and Saale-Orla. The municipal Blankenstein attains touristic distinction as the point of intersection of many bicycle tracks and long-distance walking trails and as a prominent point for wanderers who travel by water on the river Saale. The site Selbitzplatz on the expanse of the “Kontex”-blouse manufactory is the starting point and endpoint of the footpath Rennsteig.

In the progress of development the touristic potential of this location was taken into account. To allow this a compulsory auction was implemented. As a result the property was communized. The LEG Thüringen counseled the municipal Blankenstein at this process and organized the funding at the hands of the Kreissparkasse Saale-Orla.

The project was realized in 3 parts: 1. Demolition of the buildings of the “Kontex”-blouse manufactory and all outbuildings, 2. Generating the building laws and realizing a medical office in the manufactory mansion, 3. Redevelopment of the Seblitzplatz to enable a touristic use. The demolition costs reached the total of 350.000 € with the involvement of the municipal Blankenstein with 140.000 €. Difficult was the demolition of the outbuildings bordering the road L 1093 since the road underpinned by them. The eastern Thuringia building authority was involved in the process to guaranty stability of the road. With the Development of the Selbitzplatz it was possible to realize the medical office and an attractive public place with high touristic potential was created.

The project “valorization of brownfields in the administrative district Saale-Orla and Greiz was supported by the Thuringian ministry of agriculture, Forests, environment and nature conversation.
