Brief description of site and current use
The commercial port was built in the period between the years 1888-1893. In 1906 it was one of the most advanced inland ports in Germany with annual cargo turnover of 1.4 million tons. The several buildings were damaged during air raids in Magdeburg within World War II., but after the WW2 it became major port as a transport and transhipment site for the buildings materials needed for city’s reconstruction. After building additional port facilities, the commercial port lost its importance as a point of transhipment.
Due to its position - direct neighbourhood of Magdeburg University, the southern area of the Science Port in now being converted into a new site for innovative businesses and scientific institutions.
Denkfabrick (one of revitalised buildings)
Two former grain silos were converted together by adding a transparent connecting element and a new foyer to historical buildings. 4,600 square metres of office space has been created for innovative firms.
A total of €9.5 million has been invested into the Denkfabrick project. Majority of €7.3 million was in the form of Urban-21 funding provided by the European Regional development Fund (ERDF) and subsidies granted under the urban development scheme shared by the national, regional and local government.
It was identified as a pilot scheme and Science Port was featuring in the International Building Exhibition IBA Urban Redevelopment 2010.
