Brief description of site and current use

Restructuring and repurposing of the heritage protected four-sided courtyard in Großsaara

Over 15 years the heritage protected four-sided courtyard at the village center of Großsaara was out of use. The municipality wished for a municipal works yard with a multi-purpose hall and a new kindergarten, since the old one was located in the nearby village in a building which was falling into a state of dilapidation. The four-sided courtyard fulfilled all requirements but there were financial gaps within the conception of the project.

Under the project management of the LEG Thüringen it was possible to work out all preconditions for a partial financing within a year. The architect´s office reduced the assessed project costs, the Thüringer Landesamt für Denkmalpflege und Archäologie (TLDA) came up with development funds. The Regional Aktionsgruppe Gotha-Ilkreis-Erfurt (RAG) participated in financing as well (with a considerable quantity of money). Thus it was possible to draw up the entire financing for the project.

Additionally a playground for the built-in kindergarten was constructed with the aid of the sponsorship of the Sparkasse Gera-Greiz.

With the support of the association of administration Münchenbernsdorf and municipal Großsaara the project became a complete success and was acknowledged 2009 with 1.000 Euro by the foundation Wüstenrot within the framework of the contest „Land und Leute – Kleine Gemeinden gestalten ihre Zukunft im demografischen Wandel“.

Not merely it was managed to revitalize the heritage protected four-sided courtyard, but rather it was created a new decent village center with a variety of possible uses for the inhabitants. The restructured courtyard valorizes the overall appearance of the townscape and is an important step of the public services in Großsaara.
